The soundtrack to the music theater production »Geisterbahn«
The Hamburg collective »Kommando Himmelfahrt«, previously known for large-scale and extravagant music theater productions, is building a walk-in installation for the first time – a »Geisterbahn« full of thrills and adrenaline rushes for the audience. The soundtrack of this production, »Der Mensch als Pflanze«, evokes the spirit of the notorious and visionary physician-philosopher Julien Offray de la Mettrie. The French radical enlightener and womanizer lived as an internationally outlawed atheist at the court of Frederick II, where he died in 1751 after enjoying an oversized truffled pie. Shortly before his death he published »L'Homme-Plante«, an intelligent and suggestive gimmick by the philosopher. In order to prove his concept of the unity of life, he describes the similarities between humans and plants. What was considered blasphemous in its day seems today to anticipate our post-humanist age.
